Case Study: Recytrust & AIA

Recytrust is revolutionizing the waste management sector through an IoT-powered system that measures and tracks recycling performance in real time. By combining smart technology with an integrated waste collection service, Recytrust provides municipalities, businesses, and organizations with accurate data, insights, and tools to optimize recycling processes, promote transparency, and encourage sustainable behaviors.

The ‘Digital Gate’ program helped us rapidly turn our concept into a Minimum Viable Product (MVP), while also validating our market assumptions. Most importantly, it highlighted the real value of our product-as-a-service model and its potential in the business landscape.

How did they collaborate?

Recytrust partnered with Athens International Airport (AIA) to run a 30-day pilot at the airport’s Administrative Building. Smart Bin clusters were installed in two key locations — the restaurant area and the 3rd floor copy room — leveraging IoT, LoRaWAN, and BLE identification technologies to enable real-time data visualization and employee participation.

Within just one month, the pilot diverted over 5.5 tons of recyclables from landfills and achieved a 70% employee engagement rate. Additionally, Recytrust demonstrated that, by using its e-auction feature for certified collector agencies, the airport could generate an estimated revenue of up to €250 from the recyclable materials.

This collaboration showcased how data-driven waste management can deliver measurable environmental and financial benefits in a short time frame.
