Building entrepreneurial competencies early: Why students should think like innovators

In today’s fast-paced and unpredictable world, creativity, adaptability, and problem-solving are among the most powerful tools young people can acquire. Entrepreneurship is no longer just about starting a business, it’s about cultivating a mindset. A mindset that sees opportunity in uncertainty, values experimentation, and strives for positive impact. For university students, thinking entrepreneurially can be a game-changer. Regardless of whether they pursue a career in business, research, or the public sector, entrepreneurial thinking equips them to navigate complexity, collaborate effectively, and bring bold ideas to life.

Universities as innovation ecosystems

Modern universities are evolving beyond their traditional educational roles. In striving to fulfill their “third mission” of contributing to society and the economy, they are becoming vibrant innovation ecosystems. These ecosystems connect students, academics, and professionals in spaces where ideas are tested, refined, and realized. Through entrepreneurship programs, innovation labs, and experiential learning initiatives, students can bridge the gap between theory and practice, gaining critical skills in teamwork, leadership, and creative problem-solving. These experiences do more than improve employability; they foster confidence, resilience, and a deep understanding of how innovation can drive meaningful change.

From ideas to action: The IDEA FACTORY Program

To respond to the growing need for entrepreneurial skill-building in higher education, the Athens Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (ACE) of the Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB) has launched the IDEA FACTORY, an interdisciplinary entrepreneurship program designed to help students transform ideas into impactful ventures. IDEA FACTORY (Innovation Design & Entrepreneurial Action), delivered in collaboration with the Development Agency “E.A.S.Y. S.A. – A.O.T.A.” of the Municipality of Athens and supported by Athenian Brewery, brings together students and researchers from across all universities in Attica. The program promotes cross-disciplinary teamwork and the exchange of diverse perspectives to tackle real-world challenges.

During seven intensive days spread over two weeks (November 3–13, 2025), participants will:
Engage in hands-on workshops on entrepreneurship, design thinking, and innovation methodologies.
Receive personalized coaching and mentoring from experienced academics and industry professionals.
Work in interdisciplinary teams to develop innovative solutions with both social and economic impact.
At the end of the program, the top three teams will be recognized for their innovation, feasibility, and team performance, while all participants will receive a Certificate of Participation.
